Toledo completes a sweep of Cleveland Force for the season

Toledo Villa hosted Cleveland Force SC at Paul Hotmer Field for their third and final matchup of the season.  In the previous two meetings, Toledo had come away with 2-0 and 4-1 victories, and Tuesday was no different.  They came away with a 3-1 victory thanks to a pair of Anoaur Adam goals and a late Brevin Andreadis strike.  The win put us on a record of 4 wins and 5 defeats on the season.

The match started with Cleveland Force taking advantage of some sloppy play in our defensive third.  A few loose passes were pounced upon by the Cleveland Force attack, but their shooting was never threatening or on target.

Griffin Cook was involved in action at both ends of the field during the first half.  In the 20th minute, Mike Moser played the ball wide to Cook around the halfway line. Having space in front of him, he drove forward all the way to the top of the box, where he hit a low drive that was parried away for a corner.

In the 22nd minute, Zach Hassell won a free kick after a positive run forward from the flank.  The free kick, from just outside the penalty area, was taken by Mike Moser.  His inswinging free kick, aimed at the run of Anoaur Adam, who glanced the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net.

As Toledo continued pressing, they did leave themselves exposed at times.  In the 26th minute, a cross from Griffin Cook was headed clear and a quick counter attack was started by Cleveland.  Cook recovered quickly and expertly tackled the ball away from Cleveland Force striker Hoover.  The tackle was quite possibly goal saving, but left Cook with an injury that would force him to exit at the first half hydration break.

Toledo continued searching for another after the hydration break.  Zach Hassell and Zach Mowka both found pockets of space on the left hand side, but neither could curl their efforts into the goal.

Cleveland did find their equalizer just before halftime.  They raced the ball down their right hand side, with Grant Czsisar crossing into the box.  Eli Shope was unable to make a clearance, which allowed Cole Parete to step forward and slam the ball into the goal.  That's how the score would remain heading into halftime.

The second half started with Toledo trying to get back on the front foot.  They won a free kick in the 50th minute.  Mike Moser, played a lofted ball towards the back post.  Joey Akpunonu rose highest and knocked it across the face of goal.  Anoaur Adam met it, but the Cleveland Force goalkeeper Grant Glorioso, was able to snatch it out of the air.

Two minutes later, Toledo won another free kick in the same spot.  This time, Mike Moser was able to find Anouar Adam at the back post and he volleyed home for the 2-1 lead.  Anouar Adam, only has scored one goal in his four years at Lindsay Wilson, had been involved in both goals on the night.

As the game went along the 95 degree heat really started to zap the energy from the players.  Both teams used the full allotment of substitutes for the field players on the night. Josh Hughes was presented with two opportunities to extend the lead.  In the 70th minute, Kazuki Hashimoto floated a cross into the penalty area for Hughes to attack. He stretched but couldn't get his effort on target. Mike Moser had a final free kick opportunity in the 83rd minute from the right flank.  His cross found Hughes, but he was only able to hit it directly at Glorioso in net.

As the full time whistle approached Toledo was presented with a final opportunity. Substitute wingback Cliff Brown was given the ball on the flank, and he chose to drive inside.  As Cleveland attempted to slide tackle the ball away, he was able to slip in substitute Brevin Andreadis in on goal.  Andreadis stretched and was able to toe poke the ball past Glorioso for the 3-1 lead.

The win wrapped up the home slate for Toledo for the 2022 season.  The next match will be Wednesday June 30th away to the South Bend Lions.
